Some people have a horseshoe up their butt.
Some people are kicked by the horse.
Some people are the blacksmith and create the horseshoe.
Be the blacksmith! Create your own luck!
~Kelly Klein
Is it possible to create your own luck? I certainly believe it! There are people out there who may have had the same or similar circumstances to you. Somehow they dug themselves out of it and rose above. Do they have a horseshoe up their butt…or were they the blacksmith of their own life?
Here are some tips on how to make your own luck:
Love yourself
You will not get anywhere if you don’t love yourself. I know it’s easier said than done, but if you’re reading this article, chances are you already at least like yourself. You care enough about yourself to learn how to make your life better. That is what my blog is all about.
Know where you are
Before you can take steps to improve your life, you need to know where you are at. You can divide it up into categories, i.e. career/business, finances, fitness, social, spiritual, mental. Where are you at, this moment in time, in each of those categories?
Set goals
Now that you know where you are, it’s time to figure out where you want to go. I suggest using the SMART model:
S – Specific
M – Measureable
A – Achievable
R – Realistic
T – Time-bound
Be positive
You won’t get anywhere without a positive attitude. If you’re negative, you will attract more negativity. I know it’s hard to be positive, but you have to do it. In my own life, I noticed if one thing went wrong, I spiralled. I focused on the thing, and then something else went wrong. And another. And another. It was like a snowball rolling downhill, gaining momentum. It wouldn’t stop. I also noticed likewise, something went right. I was happy, and something else went right. And another. And another. So it works both ways.
Have an attitude of gratitude
Be grateful for the little things every day. It’s hard to be negative when you’re grateful for what you have. If you’re aren’t grateful for what you have now, then how can you expect to have more down the road?
Build your strengths
Don’t focus on your weaknesses. It’s good to work on your weaknesses, but you need to focus more on your strengths. Take your natural abilities and improve them.
Surround yourself with the right people
If you hang around bank robbers, sooner or later you’re going to rob a bank. Likewise, if you hang around people who are winning at life, you will also win. Find people with the fruit on the tree. What I mean is, if you want to be successful in a certain business, then find someone who’s already successful in that field, and ask advice from them. Let them lead you through the minefield, since they know the way without getting blown up.
Say yes more often
Be discerning on what you say yes to, but don’t automatically turn down opportunities when they come your way. You don’t know where it could lead. Let it take you out of your comfort zone.
Leave your comfort zone
I always say:
Outside of your comfort zone is where the magic happens and you truly feel alive.
‘Nuff said.
Be prepared for anything
Always be prepared for anything that comes your way – challenges, opportunities, obstacles, etc.
Embrace challenges
You will encounter challenges. Don’t give up. Embrace them. See them as learning experiences. Get through them and move on.
Working harder vs. working smarter
It’s important to work hard, but even more important to work smart. Be efficient, figure out how to do the thing in less time and effort. Most things aren’t as complicated as people make them out to be.
Perseverance
Don’t ever give up. You don’t know how close you are to the reward. We all have the potential to succeed. Keep going. You will get there.
Don’t depend on others
“If it’s got to be, it’s up to me.” Don’t wait for someone to hold your hand or do things for you. It’s your life, your goals, your dreams. You work for it. Don’t wait.
Get help when you need it
However, if you need help, don’t hesitate to get it from the right people. We aren’t islands. We can’t succeed completely on our own.
Learn from your mistakes
We all make mistakes. The key is to learn from them and move on. You will keep making the same mistake until you learn from it. Lesson repeated until lesson learned.
Help others
Always help others. Seek chances to help someone – whether being there as a listening ear, supporting a charity, helping out at a soup kitchen, paying it forward, etc.
Conclusion
So, as you can see, you can make your own luck. You can be the blacksmith.
You will get there.
