“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” – quote often attributed to Albert Einstein

I work in retail. As an introvert, it’s not the best place for me – it’s not where I thrive. I had a manager make me believe I am stupid because I’m not as people-y as she is. I would have the store organized, and work on tidying everything, but none of that mattered. I am task-oriented, but she believed everyone should be people-oriented. Granted, it’s a customer service job, but she made me feel dumb because I didn’t measure up.

I am in the wrong environment.

Fast forward through several months, and said manager is on leave. I was given the opportunity to spend time away from the cash register and help with merchandising. It is my thing, and I’m much happier, organizing and tidying and setting up the stores to look nice. Suddenly I am in the right environment for me, even if it’s still with the same company. I am doing what I’m good at – they finally recognize my strengths. I still want to do more with my life, but it’s proof that I can thrive with just a few minor tweaks.

How to Find the Right Environment

  1. Assess your surroundings and the people you spend time with, ensuring they align with your values and goals.
  2. What are your needs? What are your strengths? What are your interests? What are your talents? Make a list!
  3. Are you in the right place, but the wrong position? Maybe your strengths would be better used in a different place in the company you work for. Inquire about changing your position. It might be just what you need.
  4. What is your dream work environment? What is your dream home environment? Who are the people you want to spend time with?
  5. Look for a place that promotes your personal growth and aligns with your strengths, values, and beliefs.

How to Thrive in the Wrong Environment…For Now…

You may not be able to find the right environment for you right away. So how do you thrive where you are?

  1. Remember this is only temporary. You will get out of this place, if you work at getting out.
  2. Maintain a positive mindset.
  3. Identify opportunities for personal growth.
  4. Build a strong support network outside of the environment.
  5. Consider potential exit strategies.

We don’t all thrive in the same environment. A fish thrives in the water. A bird thrives in the sky. Put a bird in the water and he won’t thrive (unless he’s a duck!). Put a fish in the sky and she won’t thrive. Find the right environment, the right career, the right group of friends, the right hobbies, and you will thrive too.
