*this was written two years ago when I went to my first sci-fi fantasy convention. I recently went to the same annual convention and had a lot of fun…I’ll write about that at a later time.*

I am not a fan of science fiction or fantasy, but when I was surprised with tickets to the local convention, I went to check it out with my son, who loves all that kind of stuff. I was worried there would be nothing of interest to me, yet I was determined to get something out of it. By the end of it, I came out with a few lessons.

  1. The world is full of characters, and each character has a story. We may not know what is behind the scenes. We don’t know their motivation, but we are all fighting for something.
  2. If you’re passionate about something, grab onto it with both hands. Don’t wait for permission. Do what you love.
  3. Don’t be afraid to look foolish in front of people. Life is more fun if you put yourself out there and enjoy what life has to offer.
  4. It’s OK to take a break and do something fun. Not everything has to have a purpose. Maybe the purpose IS fun.
  5. If you’re going to do something, do it well. Reach for excellence; not perfection.
  6. Life sucks if you’re shy, so get out of your comfort zone. You won’t regret it!
  7. You can transform yourself into whomever you would like to be. Don’t do it for anyone but you.
  8. The world can seem to be a scary place, but if you put yourself out there instead of living in the sidelines, life is more rewarding.
  9. Inspiration comes in many forms, and just because fantasy didn’t interest me at first, doesn’t mean I can’t get something out of it.
  10. Some really cool costume ideas for Hallowe’en.
  11. What makes me special to be below all the other humans? We are all human, trying to make our way through life, and I’m not as bad as a person as I think I am. I, and anyone else, can become better. We all have the capacity to grow.
  12. People are cool. They are interesting. It is fun to watch them as they go about their day.
  13. Rest is important. There’s no valid reason to stay up late. We should sleep eight hours.

So, as you can see, I was way outside of my comfort zone. I took a chance and went. I had a good time, spending quality time with my son. No matter the situation you can always get something out of it. The key is to keep an open mind.

May your life be passionate!
